You Choose (The Show)

Based on the best-selling book by Pippa Goodhart and Nick Sharratt, You Choose, part of Edinburgh’s Christmas, is an interactive and musical family show.

The USP is that in this show, as the title suggests, you – that is, the audience – choose what happens during each performance.   Using the picture book as inspiration and through a series of games and challenges, each show turns up a unique story. There are different characters, a different location, different animals, different everything… every time.

The cast of two – Paul Beeson & Carrie Mancini – is great. They work as a seamless double act, able to improvise as required (i.e. most of the time) and have all the good qualities of children’s TV presenters, without ever being saccharine or patronising. They easily manage those one-liners that make the adults smirk, too.

The highlight of the show is the extent to which it really is interactive. For the brave, there are opportunities to help out on stage, for everyone else there’s an inflatable animal race (that will make sense when you see the show!) and there is endless opportunity to shout out, the louder the better.

My reluctant 8 year old (I made the mistake of telling him the recommended age guide of 2-7, so of course he had pre-decided he was too ‘old’) enjoyed himself just as much as the much younger children beside him. Quite simply, it’s fun, it’s funny, it appears a simple format but is actually clever; it’s a great family show.

You Choose comes from Nonsense Room Productions, of Shark in the Park and Hairy Maclary fame.

Festival Square Spiegeltent, until 5th January
