The effect of humans on the environment is explored in this aquatic-themed dance production from Shanghai Theatre Academy College of Dance.
Dolphins, whales and graceful fish perform for us in their underwater world, when a strange object appears that stops their freedom: a lump of plastic. Illustrated by a long line of bubble wrap, the fish are one by one enveloped in it from the waist down, hampering their movements.
The makeup and costumes are beautiful, especially the iridescent fabrics of the fish tails and the silvery capes of the whales. Graceful dances give way to angular, resigned moves as the plastic starts to choke the sea’s residents. The music is by turns flowing, relaxing and dramatic, and the climax brings a hopeful, upbeat tone; perhaps we can reverse the damage we’ve caused over the decades.
The Pure Blue is a moving, effective call to action for anyone who cares for our oceans.
