‘This is either the absolute best or worst timing for a show about Tom Lehrer’, Mitch declares at the start of his latest Fringe offering, alluding to the recent sad passing of the musical comedian aged 97. Fortunately, he didn’t need to make too many changes…

Weaving his own journey to resident satirical songwriter of Radio 4’s The Now Show with Tom’s biography, Mitch clearly shows his love for Lehrer which began when he found an album on cassette in the early 80s. He traces his path from maths genius to an unlikely concert sensation who had a deep respect for his audience, through the much-loved classic songs and a few deep cuts too for the hardcore fans- many of which were in the audience!
Because Tom put his entire back catalogue online copyright-free, there’s the opportunity to play around with the songs somewhat; so inevitably, Mitch pokes fun at Trump and the Supreme Court with some updated lyrics. Tom’s songs lend themselves perfectly to this, given he tackled subjects like the Cold War with his trademark acerbic wit. There’s a few cheeky impressions too; you’ve not lived until you’ve seen Arnie take on a Lehrer classic…
Mitch also explores the possibility that Lehrer shared the same diagnosis as he received later in life: autism and ADHD. Given the frequent overlap between these conditions and the comedy profession, it’s not impossible!
The Lehrer Effect is a joyous, nerdy hour of comedy for Tom fans and newbies alike. ****
Mitch Benn’s The Lehrer Effect is at Underbelly Jersey from 1-10 and 12-25 Aug.
