This queer romcom from Big Sofa Theatre follows the ups and downs of the pregnancy process, navigating a messy mix of emotions where boundaries have to be drawn. The cast tackle issues such as choosing from a catalogue of donors, attending cringeworthy ante-natal classes, and when planning jujitsu classes for the future child might be going a little bit overboard.
Claire and Lou’s relationship is authentically portrayed, by turns affectionate and bickering, while the tension between Lou and well-meaning but ditsy Dan is palpable. But whether it’s putting together jungle sounds CDs at the suggestion of Laura the ante-natal teacher or learning why a cervix is like a bagel during childbirth, Dan’s always there to lend a hand. Pregnancy isn’t always neat and predictable, and the Big Sofa team illustrate this with humour and sensitivity.
There’s many sad LGBTQ+ stories out there, and this definitely isn’t one of them. Eggs Aren’t That Easy To Make is a burst of queer joy, with tons of heart.
