Afternoon Tea at The Glasshouse

It’s hard to believe that 24 hours ago, we were enjoying a delicious afternoon tea in The Glasshouse Hotel, to celebrate author Anne Hamilton’s latest novel, Letters From Elena.

The Glasshouse is a handful of steps from Edinburgh Playhouse Theatre and it’s five minutes on foot to Princes Street. But find yourself – through a bit of a maze of corridors – in the secluded rooftop garden, with views over Calton Hill, and it’s an oasis of calm in the city. We chose to sit here for afternoon tea, rather than The Snug (which looks cosy and comfortable, suited to dark winter days).

I was lucky to travel to Northern Cyprus with Anne when she was researching for this novel, so while we were waiting for our refreshments to arrive, we had an impromptu book signing and photo opportunity – and a lot of reminiscing; maybe even some plans to recreate a Cyprus trip.

Along with our chosen teas – Earl Grey and Radiant Rose – came a selection of savouries and sweets. The finger sandwiches were varied and tasty, but the highlights were a haggis sausage roll and a red pepper quiche: both generous in size and very moreish. Next came plain and fruit scones, with cream and jam, and again, full-size; nothing dainty about these!

So much so, that the intricate and beautiful tiny cakes, were carefully transferred to a take-home box: passionfruit meringue, red velvet, salted caramel, chocolate – although we managed to eat the lemon posset in the sunshine.

Two French Martinis later, we were even treated to some late afternoon jazz by the very talented Dave Swings.

Afternoon tea is always an occasion, and The Glasshouse version is upholding the tradition with its own twist, in a lovely location and with friendly service. So birthday, book launch, or just a special break, this is a special treat.
