‘Humanity’s progress stands on the shoulders of giants.’
The individual country showcases are a personal Fringe highlight, and having enjoyed Tang And Four Dreams back in 2019 I was excited to see what China had to offer this time around.
The 2024 programme is a mix of theatre, puppetry, dance and music, and as part of the China Focus event we were treated to Ancient Ship performed by the Shanghai International Arts Festival Youth Art Troupe. Inspired by the 2022 excavation of a 150-year-old ship in the Yangtze river, we’re transported back to the late Qing dynasty and the ‘Maritime Silk Road’ via a curious group of children who sneak into a museum to view the artifacts – which suddenly spring to life.
There’s much to learn about the ship and its precious contents, and the explanations from the masts and porcelain bowls themselves is a fun touch. Beautiful animations of the ancient harbour are projected behind the actors, along with actual footage of the ship’s excavation. I particularly enjoyed the songs, which were nicely choreographed, and I had the privilege of seeing some of the wonderful costumes up close at the reception. The school group in front of me were mesmerised all the way through!
It’s a polished, professional performance and I can’t wait to see what the troupe bring to the next Fringe.
