Drums and Dance at Greenside Greenscreen

Ruciteme Karyenda Culture de Buyenzi is a group of Burundian drummers, founded in 1987. They have 27 members ranging in age from 8 to 50, and now bring their award-winning spectacle to the Fringe for one morning only.

The dance in this show is an old traditional one performed for kings, streamed live from Bujumbura; their hope is that it unites nations and bring happiness and peace. And it certainly raised my spirits!

The costumes are vibrant, the acrobatics deftly executed, and the drumming impeccable. For much of the dance the hand-carved instruments are played on the musicians’ heads, which is quite the balancing feat.

I particularly enjoyed the high kicks, drumstick spinning and the dance leader’s vigorous routine with his spear and shield.

Intambo was a thrilling, unique experience and I hope they will return in person for another Fringe
