Play it Safe with seafood in National BBQ Week

Fish is the Dish, the consumer face of industry body Seafish, is helping consumers to make the most of National BBQ Week 2014 (26 May – 1 June) with top tips and recipes.

Teaming up with celebrity chef Ben Bartlett, known as BBQ Ben, Fish is the Dish has a range of tasty seafood recipes perfect for the BBQ. Ben was the first winner of Britain’s Best BBQ’er and travels all over the world competing with The Best of British BBQ Team at the BBQ Olympics. Nobody knows more about barbequing and as a judge at the Young Seafood Chef of the Year awards, he also knows his seafood.

While people are happy to try sausages, burgers and chicken over hot coals, most people forget about seafood, but why?

Simply, sausages and burgers are seen to be a safe bet and an easy option. However, everyone has been victim to a cremated chicken kebab or scarily undercooked sausages – a good barbeque afternoon is quickly ruined. With our changeable weather, there is often the scenario of part BBQ-cooked/part oven-cooked meat as the barbequing is taking too long.

Seafood, however, is versatile, easy and quick and there is very little chance of making yourself or others ill due to undercooking. Most seafood dishes on the BBQ take just minutes to cook and there is less chance of cross-contamination as people generally cook fish separately.

Ben says: “There are plenty of delicious options for barbequing seafood, from cooking up a simple stuffed whole fish, to creating kebabs and foil parcels that take just minutes to prepare and minutes to cook. It’s packed full of vitamins and minerals and you’re not at risk of undercooking it which means a tasty AND stress-free BBQ for everyone.”

Ben has shared three of his favourite seafood BBQ recipes inspired from around the world and there are more new seafood inspired BBQ dishes available at
