The Nor Loch – Malcolm Fife

First published in 2001, this updated version of The Nor Loch, Scotland’s lost loch refers, for those not aware of it, to the loch which once graced what is now Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh. Fife explores the history of this artificial loch, which endured for just a few hundred years. Originally formed as part of the city’s defences, the Loch was also used for more sinister purposes, such as ducking felons and drowning witches.

The book covers other prehistoric lochs and relates the development of the capital to the story of the loch. Thoroughly researched and full of interest and anecdote, illustrations and maps bring this strange part of Edinburgh’s watery past to life.
