Holding On — Jo Gambi

To be afflicted with cancer once is bad enough but twice? It must make you sort out some priorities. That’s just what climbers Jo and Rob Gambi did. This is the moving story of their decision to ‘Go For It’ and climb the Seven Summits (the highest mountains on seven continents) and ski to the North and South Poles, while Rob was in remission from his second bout of cancer.

The book opens with the couple’s whirlwind romance, during which time Rob learnt to climb, in order to win the hand of the lady he loved. After four years of marriage, cancer returned and after fighting through it all again, the couple decided to live life to the full while they could.

Their record breaking achievement brought them closer together in a way we can only imagine. Back home, they have to try to pick up the threads of ‘normal life’ but as Jo says, “Perhaps, in the strangest of ways, occasionally having our heads in the clouds will help keep our feet on the ground.”
