Here we look at some of the many possible alternative ways to treat common problems

The bus is late, the baby is late, the rent is late or dinner is late. Anxiety mostly concerns the future, though people also worry about the past. But anxiety actually only occurs in the present tense and has done so since we worried about crawling back into the sea (from which we probably emerged in the first place to avoid another source of anxiety.) So our genes have had plenty of time to adapt to it. The fact that it remains such a major factor in our lives means that it must have strong protective benefits, which suggests that it helps to keep us alive and well. So to get rid of anxiety would ultimately be detrimental to our well-being: it has a purpose.
As anyone on medication for anxiety knows, it can be wonderful to be relaxed and worry-free. But if the drug is so powerful that we lead our lives in such a way as to jeopardise our well-being and future, it isn’t doing us much good. And the rise in addictions (tobacco, some medications, social drugs and gambling to name but a few) in recent years is a threat to all our futures. If a treatment leaves us clearer in our minds, better able to appreciate our needs, more decisive and with more energy to do what is necessary to improve our situation, then it is beneficial. Unlike drugs, which only work when you take them, which make you need more, and which may ultimately poison you.
One of the oldest ways to combat anxiety is exercise, by which I mean not a gentle stroll, but exercise that tires and tests, without exhausting you. Exercise is good for tension of any sort, and for some, is all we need. Another ancient way of coping is via meditation and prayer, (which are not the same thing) which help bring order to our thoughts, tranquillity of purpose, and increased objectivity. All three, exercise, meditation and prayer, also help lower our blood pressure and have remarkably beneficial effects on our physiology. As I explained in the last issue, eating the right foods, and avoiding the wrong ones, for your own particular metabolism, can bring similar benefits, whilst also strengthening your constitutions to cope better.
So these are all things we can do for ourselves, and perhaps should do before we seek outside help. Otherwise, no matter how much help we receive, we shall fall back into ill-health – and the further we fall the harder it is to extract ourselves.
So, you have fallen down that black hole of anxiety and its attendant emotions! You are constantly anxious, or there is something that brings anxiety, and you have little control over your reaction to it. You need help – and let us suppose that you have finally decided that medication and addiction are not the way forward, that you are as yet in no condition to take adequate exercise, don’t know how to meditate or pray, and the benefits of the right foods don’t come fast enough! And you certainly don’t need counselling. (At least in your opinion!) What to do?
Many forms of alternative treatment are really effective in treating chronic conditions of anxiety. Indeed, in Traditional Chinese Medicine, offhand I can think of at least 16 different forms of it without even opening a textbook, hence the Chinese have recognised and treated anxiety for thousands of years. So always consider acupuncture and Chinese Herbs as powerful ways forward. But here are descriptions of two modern therapies which owe much of their understanding to the Traditional Chinese concepts, with practitioners here in the Lothians.
Emotional Freedom Techniques
Emotional Freedom Techniques or EFT as it is often known was developed by Gary Craig in the United States from Thought Field Therapy and stems from a combination of Traditional Chinese Medicine, modern Applied Kinesiology, NLP and Neurophysiology. Despite this seeming complexity it is much simpler than it sounds and almost 100% effective.EFT is a meridian therapy, meridians being the 12 major invisible pathways of chi which form a network of energy channels throughout the body. Tapping on points where the meridians are close to the surface of the skin dissolves negative emotions: — sadness, anger, fear, injustice, anxiety, despondency, worry, irritability, despair, guilt, the effects of traumas and many physical symptoms: — headache, low energy, back pain, PMT, tension, joint pain, weight problems, even addictions.
These issues, physical or emotional are removed from the system, permanently, without any pain and very often in only one session. As an added bonus clients are shown how to tap themselves for any new problems that may arise in the future.
EFT has been in Britain for only a few years but it is spreading rapidly as its success becomes more widely known. Just recently it was demonstrated on TV on the Richard and Judy Show where a client was released from her fear of heights.
EFT UK is an Edinburgh based company which offers Emotional Freedom Techniques for individual client sessions or for Practitioner Training. Alan and Fiona Morison are a husband and wife team who have had considerable success in a wide range of client issues from sexual abuse and depression to spider phobia, fear of flying and even being ‘spooked’ by a scary film. Further details can be seen on their website
A notable success was with an elderly lady who had suffered back pain for 45 years despite surgery, osteopathy and physiotherapy. After less than an hour’s EFT, she left, pain free on cloud nine. She could scarcely believe that she could now walk without any effort.
But perhaps their most dramatic success involved a young man ‘Jack’ who had been severely sexually abused as a boy. He said he had been so badly affected by his traumas that he went wild, ending up in prison on more than one occasion for a variety of crimes. However he felt that the counselling he had just had over the past year had helped him get through his traumas and he was ready to go straight and settle down now. He talked sensibly and in a level-headed manner but then he added flatly, “If I ever meet the guy who did it to me I’m going to kill him”. Despite the deadpan voice his emotions were still running high with the continued effect of his trauma, so he was offered EFT.
He accepted straight away. He recognised he had a need for vengeance and within minutes it was tapped out of his system, which he acknowledged with a sigh saying, “If I meet him again I’m not going to like him, but I’m not going to kill him.” Not only were these issues tapped away, but also a very big issue he had over the fact that his mother had been (wrongly in his opinion) incarcerated in a mental institution for many years. The big chip on his shoulder with the health authorities was removed and he felt so much more at ease with himself. The final bonus for him was that he also left with a lesser desire for cigarettes as he had lastly been tapped for his smoking addiction.
Not only was the premature ending of someone’s life avoided but a young man’s life was dramatically changed in just a few minutes from that of many years of hardship and deprivation in a prison cell to a much clearer road ahead full of potential. Alan and Fiona just wish that Social Services had EFT at their fingertips for the benefit of all in need.
Progress however is being made and Fiona has taken EFT into Craigmount High School in Edinburgh, where she works as a teacher. Both staff and students have benefited from her skills. The ultimate aim is to have EFT in all schools in the country to help deal with bullying, substance abuse, exam nerves and personal problems. With this in mind, EFT UK has approached the City Council with a view to having EFT added to the Continuing Professional Development programme for teaching staff.
Contact details are on the EFT website, and all enquiries are welcome, either for help with personal issues or about the Training Courses.
Reiki, (pronounced Ray-Key) is the name of a complementary therapy technique that is deeply relaxing, which in turn can reduce stress and promote healing. The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words, one translation that is generally accepted is “spiritually guided vital life energy”. Jo Spaczynska has been working with Reiki energy since 1990 and continues to be astounded by the power and yet the gentleness of Reiki.
When I am working and I place my hands on a person’s body or on myself the vital life energy flows. This vital life energy is what keeps us and every other living thing alive. If our vital life energy is low, then we are more likely to become ill and be stressed; if it is high, the possibilities for health and happiness are a reality.
When receiving Reiki, it feels as if a wonderful glowing radiance flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit and can create many beneficial effects including relaxation and feelings of peace, security and well being.
On a mental level, Reiki flows into all levels of thinking processes and in doing so allows them to release negative thoughts, concepts and attitudes and replace them with positivity, peace and serenity. This creates a deep sense of relaxation and release of tension and stress. Reiki energy can assist in releasing the emotional anxiety and boosting self-confidence. Reiki can be used in various ways and can also be sent to someone at a pre-arranged time. I could therefore send Reiki to help support the person during a stressful time, such as a school examination, to keep them relaxed.
Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and because it comes from the Universe, God or the Higher Power, it always creates a beneficial effect. It also works alongside all other medical and therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.
Because it is guided by the Higher intelligence, it knows exactly where to go and how to respond to restrictions in the flow of energy. It can work directly in the unconscious parts of the mind/body clearing negative thoughts and/or feelings allowing a normal healthy flow of energy. As this happens, the unhealthy physical organs and tissues become properly nourished with Ki and begin functioning in a balanced healthy way, thus replacing illness with health.
