Happy Ever After? Short Story Competition

Lothian Life is delighted to announce a 500 word short story competition. It’s open to everyone, it’s free to enter, and the theme is simply to write something ‘uplifting’ …

The competition is open now, with a deadline of midnight on Monday 11th December 2017, when judges, Sandy Bennett-Haber and Marie Campbell, will get together to choose a winner and two runners-up. A shortlist will be announced the week of the 10th January 2018.

The Competition

What we’re looking for is a very short story on any subject that somehow has a positive or upbeat message! It does not have to be that ‘they all lived happily ever after’, but there should at least be an element of hope in the tale. And it should be a complete story with a beginning, middle and end rather than a description or vignette. And the 500 word limit is strict: you can write as few words as you like, but you must not exceed 500 words – and that includes the title.

The Prizes

First prize is a 6-week online writing course from WriteRight Editing Services. (Choose from either short fiction or novel-writing programmes).

Two runners-up will receive a copy of Baby, by Marie Campbell and You Won’t Remember This, by Sandy Bennett-Haber.

All three winning stories will be published in Lothian Life.

The Judges

Sandy Bennett-Haber is an Edinburgh-based Australian writer with a BA (Hons) Creative Writing- from Monash University. She blogged her way around the world in 2011 before coming to rest in Scotland, where she lives with her husband and two young sons. Sandy is the editor of You Won’t Remember This – Travel with Babies, and a founder member of the Women Writers Network. She has had short stories published in the UK and Australia.

Marie Campbell lives in Edinburgh with her partner and two young sons. After taking a career break from the Civil Service, Marie has established herself as an author and qualified proofreader. She has written a number of short stories and articles, and in 2016, she published her debut novel, Baby.

Sandy and Marie are both regular contributors to Lothian Life.

They will be joined by Anne Hamilton, Lothian Life’s editor, and director of WriteRight.
