Peg the little sheepdog is too shy to be a good farm dog. All Peg’s brothers and sisters find new homes but Peg is left behind. Even her mother leaves her as she is working on the croft all day.
At this point the book ‘we’ appear, we being a family who move into the area and fall in love with Peg. Despite loving her, they discover that as well as being too timid to work, she hasn’t learnt how to behave in a house, or how to be obedient when they are out for walks. She eats the family’s food, sleeps on the sofa and is scared of being left alone at night.
The family have to train her by gradually introducing her to other animals, by rewarding her when she is obedient and giving her lots of love and attention to make her feel safer and stronger.
This is another charming Scottish themed picture book from Floris, written by a Dutch lady who has taken the Hebrides to her heart and writes and draws with lovely detail about learning how to grow up in the beauty of the Scottish Hebrides.
