Chairman Award for Mizanur

Mizanur Rahman, Channel S Scotland reporter has been awarded ‘‘Channel S Chairman Award’’ for his outstanding professional excellence in TV media which has helped to promote the Bangladeshi community in Scotland. The Chairman award was launched this year by the “Channel S” television to honour broadcasting journalists working in the Bengali media within the UK and Europe.

Mizanur, who lives in Edinburgh, was born and brought up in Srimongol, Moulvibazar. It wasn’t always his plan to become a journalist. His first degree was in Biological Science after which he worked worked in natural resource management on conservation projects in Dhaka. Always keen to tell a good story, Mizanur began his journalistic career as a sideline at the Srimongol-based local weekly Srimongoler Chiti in the early 90s.

Mizanur came to the UK in 2003 to study for an M.Sc. in Sustainable Development from Stirling University. He now works for the Edinburgh and Lothian Racial Equality Council as an Events Coordinator. “Working for the community is my vision,” Mizanur told us, “My main skills are in communicating with people from every walk of life …”

Mizanur RahmanChannel S (Sky 814), a London based Bengali television company, was launched three years ago to serve the Bangladeshi community across the UK and Europe. It has been proved to be a real bridge between different sections within the Bangladeshi community. As journalism has to be fitted in around his day job, Mizanur said that, receiving the award was one of his proudest moments. ‘‘I still don’t think I can really believe it - I just feel so privileged and honoured. I’ve always thought of these honours as the sort of things you report on, not that you actually receive.”

Ahmed us Samad Choudhury JP, Chairman of Channel S, presented the award at a ceremony on 24 th February, rather aptly during a workshop on TV journalism Skills’.
